Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the study of the molecules that make up living things and the chemical reactions that keep them alive. In this lesson you will learn about the molecules of life and how enzymes work.

1 · The molecules of life

The three main molecules of life.
  • Carbohydrates — give energy.
  • Proteins — build and repair the body.
  • Lipids — store energy and insulate the body.

2 · Enzymes

An enzyme fits its substrate like a key fits a lock.

Enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions. They are called catalysts. Each enzyme has a specific shape that fits a specific molecule, like a key fits a lock.

3 · Energy and ATP

能量與 ATP

Cells need energy to work. This energy is stored in a molecule called ATP. Cellular respiration releases energy from food and stores it as ATP, which the cell then uses.

🔑 Key idea

Food → energy (ATP) → work. ATP is the energy currency of the cell.

4 · Quick check
