Multiplication is repeated addition, and division is sharing into equal groups. In this lesson you will learn the times tables, how to multiply, and how to divide.

Multiplication is repeated addition. 3 × 4 means 4 added 3 times: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.

2 · Times tables

乘法表

The times tables help you multiply quickly. The 5 times table goes 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and so on. Learn them by heart to get fast at maths.

5 × 1 = 5, 5 × 2 = 10, 5 × 3 = 15, 5 × 4 = 20, 5 × 5 = 25.

3 · What is division?

甚麼是除法？

12 apples shared into 4 equal groups gives 3 apples each.

12 個蘋果平均分成 4 組，每組有 3 個。

Division is sharing into equal groups. 12 ÷ 4 means sharing 12 things into 4 equal groups, giving 3 in each group. Division is the opposite of multiplication.

除法是平均分成幾份。12 ÷ 4 是指把 12 樣東西平均分成 4 組，每組有 3 樣。除法是乘法的相反。

4 · Fact families

事實家族

Multiplication and division are related. If 3 × 4 = 12, then 12 ÷ 4 = 3 and 12 ÷ 3 = 4. They form a fact family.

乘法和除法是相關的。如果 3 × 4 = 12，那麼 12 ÷ 4 = 3、12 ÷ 3 = 4。它們組成一個「事實家族」。

3 × 4 = 123 乘 4 等於 12。
4 × 3 = 124 乘 3 等於 12。
