Numbers are everywhere. In this lesson you will learn what numbers are, how to count, how to compare numbers, and how place value works.

1 · What is a number?

甚麼是數字？

A number tells us how many things there are. We use digits from 0 to 9 to write numbers. The number 5 means five things.

數字告訴我們有多少東西。我們用 0 到 9 的數字符號來寫數字。數字 5 代表五樣東西。

The ten digits we use to write all numbers.

我們用來書寫所有數字的十個數字符號。

2 · Counting

數數

Counting tells us how many things there are.

數數告訴我們有多少東西。

Counting means saying numbers in order: one, two, three, and so on. We count to find out how many things there are. Count each thing once and do not miss any.

數數是指按順序讀出數字：一、二、三……我們數數來找出有多少東西。每樣東西數一次，不要漏掉。

3 · Comparing numbers

比較數字

We can compare numbers. 7 is bigger than 3. 2 is smaller than 5. The symbol greater than (>) means bigger, and less than (<) means smaller.

我們可以比較數字。7 比 3 大。2 比 5 小。大於符號（>）代表較大，小於符號（<）代表較小。

7 > 3 means "7 is greater than 3".

4 · Place value

位值

In 25, the 2 is in the tens place and the 5 is in the ones place.

在 25 中，2 在十位，5 在個位。

In the number 25, the digit 2 is in the tens place and means 20, and the digit 5 is in the ones place and means 5. So 25 = 20 + 5.

在數字 25 中，數字 2 在十位，代表 20；數字 5 在個位，代表 5。所以 25 = 20 + 5。
